Breaking the Creativity Cycle
Hook
“We are creatures of habit even in our creativity.”
Research
Stanford University — Mundrada et al. (2021)
The study found that people often fall into repetitive patterns when engaging in creative tasks, limiting their creative potential without realizing it.

I recently found myself doodling the same floral patterns over and over. What started as a spontaneous act of creativity quickly morphed into a mindless repetition, devoid of its initial excitement.
In my writing, I notice similar patterns—certain phrases I overuse or plot structures I gravitate towards without thinking. It feels comforting, like slipping into a well-worn pair of shoes, but it also feels stifling, like a conversation looping back to the same starting point.
Perhaps the challenge is not just to create, but to create with awareness. Breaking free from these invisible cycles might require the courage to wander into unfamiliar territory and to embrace the unease of not knowing where it will lead.
The Insight
True creativity emerges when we disrupt the patterns we unconsciously cling to.
