Invisible Strings of Social Behavior
Hook
“Our surroundings often pull the strings of our behavior without us even noticing.”
Research
University of Toronto — Jetten et al., 2019
The study found that individuals' social behavior greatly fluctuates based on their perceived social status within different environments. People tend to adjust their actions and attitudes according to the hierarchical cues present around them.

I remember the subtle shift in my demeanor whenever I walked into a boardroom meeting. Suddenly, I found myself sitting up straighter, choosing my words more carefully, and often nodding in agreement with those I deemed 'higher up' the ladder.
It's amazing how an environment like that can transform a person. It's as if some internal switch flicks on, activating a version of myself that's acutely aware of who holds the power around the table. Yet, outside of that environment, I'm far more relaxed and assertive in my interactions.
These invisible nudges from our surroundings can sometimes feel like a puppet master pulling our strings. Recognizing this has made me more mindful of how I carry myself and aware of the subtle influences shaping my behavior.
The Insight
We are often unaware of how our environments invisibly guide our social behavior, revealing how deeply our actions are tied to our surroundings.
