Motivations: The Stories We Tell
Hook
“We are the most unreliable narrators of our own lives.”
Research
Stanford University — Mischel et al., 2011
The study revealed that when participants recalled their past decisions, they often misremembered their motivations to align more closely with their current beliefs and values.

I often catch myself justifying past choices with reasons that feel right now but didn't exist then. It's like my mind is crafting a narrative that fits who I am today.
The real motivations are hazy in the rearview mirror, and it's unsettling to think I might be rewriting my own history without realizing it. I wonder how many of my stories are actually fabricated tales.
It makes me question the authenticity of my motivations in the present. Am I really acting out of genuine desire, or is my mind already scripting a future version of me who'll look back and see it differently?
The Insight
The stories we tell ourselves about our motivations are often more about who we want to be than who we truly are.
