The Dark Side of Empathy
Hook
“Empathy can blind you to the truth.”
Research
Yale University — Bloom et al. (2014)
The study found that excessive empathy can lead to biased decision-making, as people may prioritize the needs of individuals they empathize with over broader, more rational considerations.

I've always prided myself on being a compassionate person, often going out of my way to help others. But there have been moments when this empathy has clouded my judgment, making me choose between the needs of one person over what might be best for everyone involved.
I remember once being so overwhelmed by a friend's plight that I ignored the advice of others and even my own rational thinking. I acted impulsively, thinking I was doing the right thing, but, in hindsight, the decision caused more harm than good.
It was a hard lesson to learn that empathy, while a powerful tool, needs to be balanced with logic. Our good-hearted intentions can sometimes lead us astray if we aren't careful.
The Insight
True emotional intelligence involves balancing empathy with objectivity to make sound decisions.
