I always thought of empathy as an unqualified good. It's what sets us apart, makes us human, right? But digging into Paul Bloom's work, I found myself face to face with a discomforting truth: empathy's guiding light can also cast shadows.
I've noticed this in my own life. The moments when I've been driven by empathy to support a friend, I sometimes failed to see the broader impact of my actions. My tendency to focus on the needs of those closest to me has occasionally led to ignoring the bigger picture, leaving others in the peripheral, unseen.
