Mystery of the Midnight Grocer
The clang of the bell above the grocery store door sounded too loud in the dead of night. Mary shivered as she stepped inside, the fluorescent lights tinting the world an odd shade of yellow. The store was deserted, except for a familiar figure restocking shelves—a face she knew all too well.
"Sam," she whispered, both relieved and perplexed. Her younger brother glanced up, his eyes widening in surprise.
"Mary? What are you doing here? It's midnight!" Sam replied, his voice echoing slightly in the empty aisles.
Mary fumbled with her list, eyes darting around the store. "I need ingredients for tomorrow's big bake sale. Everything went missing from my pantry. All my flour, sugar, even the baking soda!" She paused, suspicion threading through her voice as she added, "It's all very peculiar."
Sam chuckled nervously, avoiding direct eye contact. "That is strange. Let's find what you need."
The siblings moved through the aisles, the hum of refrigerators and faint music overhead casting a surreal atmosphere. As they added items to the basket, Mary couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something was amiss.
"Funny how everything disappeared right before your sale," Sam commented, trying to sound casual.
"Exactly," Mary responded, glancing sideways at him. "And here you are, conveniently working the night shift."
Sam cleared his throat. "Just helping out Mr. Willis. He’s out of town, and I offered to cover his late shift."
They reached the cereal aisle when Mary’s gaze fell upon something peculiar in Sam's cart—exactly the kind of baking supplies she'd lost.
"Sam," she sighed, realization dawning on her. "Those are my ingredients, aren’t they?"
Sam shifted uncomfortably. "Okay, okay, you got me. I needed them for a baking contest at school. I planned to replace them before you noticed, but got caught up with work."
Mary crossed her arms, torn between annoyance and amusement. "You’re the culprit? All this time I blamed the cat! Why didn’t you just ask?"
"I thought you'd say no," he admitted sheepishly. "I really wanted to win."
Mary shook her head, a smile creeping across her face. "Well, you’re in luck. How about we bake together for both events? We can win some prizes and put on a show!"
Sam’s eyes lit up at the suggestion. "Deal! But you’ll have to teach me your secret frosting technique."
"Only if you promise to not raid my pantry again," Mary teased.
The two laughed, the mystery of the missing ingredients now solved, the night's strange aura lifting as they gathered the remaining items. The bell chimed again as they exited, leaving the shadowy store behind and stepping into the cool night, a new plan for the bake sale forged under the stars.
