In a small diner at the edge of town, the neon sign flickered inconsistently. Inside, the faint sound of a radio hummed along with the clinking of dishes. It was the start of another night shift, and Jesse, the lone server, settled in behind the counter, notebook open and pen ready.
"How's it going, Jesse?" asked Roy, the grizzled cook who seemed to belong more to the diner than any piece of furniture.
