The Silent Clock of Midnight
Mallory had always liked the night shift. From her post at the old railway station, she watched as the darkness painted the world in shades of mystery. The station, once bustling with life, now seemed to slip quietly into the folds of history, hosting only a few late-night travelers hurrying to catch trains that disappeared into the black horizon.
Each night was much like the one before, until a peculiar happening began. It was subtle at first—the soft ticking of a clock that seemed to echo through the corridors, despite the station having no clock to produce such a sound.
Mallory's curiosity piqued, she spent her breaks wandering the empty halls, searching for the source of the noise. The sound grew louder each night, as if willing her to find it. The few passengers who shuffled by never seemed to notice it, their minds preoccupied with other thoughts.
It was on a particularly foggy night that Mallory decided to follow the sound in earnest. She felt drawn to it, as if the station's very foundation was whispering secrets through those measured ticks. They led her down to the old maintenance room, long since abandoned and locked for years.
With a trembling hand, she pushed the door open, surprised to find it gave way easily. Inside, the air was thick with dust and age, yet the sound of the ticking was vibrant, alive. Her eyes fell upon an ancient clock, the likes of which she had never seen. Its face was adorned with strange symbols, its hands moving steadily despite the lack of visible power.
Mallory felt a chill as she realized this clock had been keeping its own time, separate from the hustle of the outside world, marking moments known only to itself. In its presence, she felt a queer sense of destiny and—strange as it seemed—belonging.
The station manager found her the next morning, still standing before the clock, eyes wide and reflective. "Ah," he said, without surprise, "I see you've met the station's heart."
Mallory turned to him, puzzled. "The heart?"
"Yes," he replied knowingly. "Every station has one. This one, though..." He paused, a twinkle in his eye as if he were privy to cosmic jokes. "It chooses who gets to hear it. And now, it's chosen you."
As the dawn's light crept through the windows, Mallory understood. The decision had indeed been made long before she'd ever stepped into the station. The ticking was not just a sound, but a call, a purpose that had waited patiently for her to arrive.
That day, as she left the station, she glanced back at the old building, now her silent companion in the nights to come. She felt a connection deeper than time—a shared secret between them, locked in the rhythm of that mysterious, ticking clock.
