The Change We Avoid
Hook
“The easiest habits to change are often the ones we never start.”
Research
Stanford University — Wood et al. (2020)
The study found that people tend to underestimate the impact of external cues on their behavior, leading them to overestimate their ability to change habits without altering their environment.

I find it strangely comforting yet unsettling to realize how little control I have over my own impulses. The truth is, I've often attributed my failures in changing habits to a lack of willpower, when in fact, I simply haven't been realistic about the powerful role my environment plays.
If I look back, the cycles are glaringly obvious. My attempts to eat healthier faltered every time I stocked sugary snacks at home. Yet, I would always blame my lack of discipline, not the cookies peeking at me from the pantry.
The discomfort comes not just from exposing a personal flaw but from realizing how widespread and persistent this misconception is. We are creatures of habit, shaped more by our surroundings than we dare to admit.
The Insight
The human truth is that our surroundings often have more say in our habits than we do.
