The Unnerving Commute

Story · 3 min read · Jun 22, 6:28 PM

Story

Every morning before dawn, Ethan boarded the number 7 train with a sinking feeling in his stomach. It wasn't the early hour, nor the monotonous journey into the city that unsettled him—it was the shadowy figure that always appeared in the far corner of the carriage, mired in the dim light, its features obscured by a wide-brimmed hat. Ethan never saw the figure board or disembark, yet it was always there, a silent sentinel. The first time Ethan noticed the figure, he shrugged it off as an odd commuter, but as weeks passed, its presence felt increasingly unnerving. No one else seemed to pay it any mind; passengers scrolled through their phones, oblivious to the strange aura enveloping the shadow. Ethan, meanwhile, could barely focus on his own routine, his attention constantly drawn back to the dark silhouette. One dreary midweek morning, Ethan's curiosity got the better of him. He planned to confront the figure, hoping a simple conversation would dispel his misgivings. As the train rattled through the tunnel, Ethan stood and approached the corner. Drawing nearer, he felt a chill not from the air, but something deeper, a bone-deep coldness. "Excuse me," Ethan stammered. His voice sounded alien, swallowed by the noise of the train. The figure turned slightly, revealing a hint of a smile beneath the hat's shadow, unsettling yet unexpectedly serene. Ethan's courage faltered; he retreated to his seat, pulse racing. The next few commutes were a blur of anxiety and second guesses. Each morning, the figure was there, and Ethan's resolve dwindled with every failed attempt to engage. He began to dread the commute, developing an unease that gnawed at him long after the train had reached his stop. Then, one fog-laden morning, the train screeched to an unexpected halt, halfway to the city. Lights flickered and dimmed, the carriage cloaked in an eerie semi-darkness. Passengers murmured nervously. In the confusion, Ethan caught sight of the figure. To his shock, the shadow had moved closer, its outline clearer than ever before. Before panic could set in, the overhead intercom crackled, announcing a potential hazard on the tracks ahead. Passengers were instructed to remain calm. Ethan's heart hammered as he glanced at the figure, now just a few seats away. But instead of the fear he expected, he felt a strange sense of safety wash over him. When the train finally resumed its journey, the figure returned to its corner, its features once again shrouded by the darkness. By the time they arrived at the station, Ethan felt strangely reluctant to leave the carriage. Weeks passed, and Ethan found his fear of the commute replaced by an odd reassurance. The shadow, no longer a source of dread, felt like a constant companion. He never learned its name, nor saw its face, but somehow, it made the longest commute feel a little less so. And so, Ethan rode the number 7 train each morning, his once unsettling guardian now a silent ally amid the city's chaos, protecting him in a way he had yet to understand.

Emma
Hey Jake, where did you go? I'm at the café.
Jake
I got a bit lost, trying to find this museum you mentioned.
Emma
The Louvre? It's huge! How did you get lost?
Jake
Took a wrong turn somewhere. Paris is a maze!
Emma
True, but are you okay? You sounded off earlier.
Jake
Just tired. Can we meet at the Eiffel Tower instead?
Emma
Sure, but let's stick together next time, okay?
Jake
Of course. I'll see you there soon.
2 / 5
Emma
Perfect! I got us tickets for the view.
Jake
Great, I can't wait to see it!
Emma
Wait... Jake, where did you go last night?
Jake
Oh, just wandered around a bit. Why?
Emma
Someone told me they saw you at a club. Alone.
Jake
Uh, must have been mistaken identity.
Emma
It's just strange you wouldn't mention it.
Jake
Sorry, guess I just forgot.
3 / 5
Emma
You're acting different, like you're hiding something.
Jake
Just stressed, honestly. I promise, nothing's wrong.
Emma
Alright, if you say so. But really, you can talk to me.
Jake
Thanks, Emma. I appreciate it.
Emma
Okay, heading to the Eiffel Tower now. Be safe!
Jake
Will do. Almost there myself.
Emma
You know, friendship's about trust, Jake.
Jake
Absolutely. You're my best friend.
4 / 5
Emma
Just wish you'd been honest about the club.
Jake
Okay, I'll admit it. I needed some space and new experiences.
Emma
That's all it was? You could have just told me.
Jake
I know... I'm sorry. Next time, no secrets.
Emma
Promise?
Jake
Promise.
Emma
Alright, see you soon, then. Let's enjoy Paris!
Jake
Can't wait to see your face when we get that view!
5 / 5
Emma
Haha, same here! Better not keep me waiting.
Jake
Wouldn't dream of it.
Emma
Catch you in a bit!

Can't sleep... anyone up for a late night chat?
Sam
Here! What's on your mind, Charlie?
Tina
I'm listening too. What's up?
Charlie
Just thinking about how life takes unexpected turns.
Sam
Ah, the classic 'life reflection' hour.
Tina
I get it, Charlie. Sometimes, it feels like we're all just figuring it out as we go.
Alex
Hey, just joined. What's the topic of tonight's existential crisis?
Sam
Life's unpredictability, Alex. The usual.
2 / 5
Jordan
It's funny how we all seem to be protecting each other from the truth sometimes.
Charlie
Yeah, like how I've been saying I'm okay when I'm really not.
Tina
Same here, Charlie. I'm always telling you guys things are fine at work, but they're not.
Sam
Tina, why didn't you say anything?
Tina
I thought I was protecting you all from worrying. But maybe that wasn't the best choice.
Charlie
I've been doing the same. Didn't want to burden you guys.
Jordan
It's like we all wear masks to protect each other, but maybe we shouldn't.
Alex
True. We should be able to be real with each other, even if it's hard.
3 / 5
Robin
Sorry, been quiet, just taking it all in. It's tough to balance being honest and not wanting to worry your friends.
Charlie
Absolutely, Robin. But maybe honesty can be a way of showing love too.
Sam
We should promise to be more open with each other. Deal?
Tina
Deal. No more pretending.
Jordan
Deal. Let's keep it real with each other.
Alex
Deal. Heart-to-heart honesty pact activated.
Robin
Deal. Feels good to have friends like you all.
Charlie
Feeling a bit lighter already. Thanks, everyone.
4 / 5
Sam
We got each other's backs, right?
Tina
Always.
Alex
No doubt.
Robin
100%.
Jordan
Always here for you guys.
Charlie
Alright, time to try and get some sleep. Night, everyone.
Sam
Night!
Tina
Goodnight, folks!

Alex
Sleep well!
Robin
Sweet dreams.
