The Words Our Bodies Whisper
Hook
“Your body has been speaking all along—and you’ve been ignoring it.”
Research
Max Planck Institute — Meyer et al., 2017
The study found that subtle physiological responses, such as changes in heart rate, occur when people hear different languages, even if they do not consciously understand them. These bodily reactions happen before any conscious processing, indicating a deep-seated, automatic response to linguistic stimuli.

I always thought I was pretty savvy when it came to reading the room, but it turns out my body might be doing an even better job than my conscious mind. All those times I felt uneasy or inexplicably calm while someone spoke in a foreign language, perhaps it wasn't just me 'overthinking'—it was my heart responding, in its own quiet language.
When I reflect on this, I realize how often I dismiss these bodily cues as irrelevant noise. Too many times, I prioritize logic and reason, overlooking the whispers of my body which might actually be the most honest communicators I have.
Acknowledging this, it makes me wonder what else I might be missing out on by ignoring these subtle signs. Maybe if we paid more attention to how our bodies react to language—not just what we hear but how we feel—we could connect more authentically with each other.
The Insight
Our bodies understand languages of emotion that our minds often overlook.
